THEO-2810:(CRN: 42350 / 42351) Theology and the Environment

Professor: Catherine Yanko

This half-semester module will examine Christian environmental ethics. Among the topics we will cover: Christian theological interpretations of nature (including why/how nature is valued in a Christian perspective); methodological approaches to environmental ethics; the interplay between environmental ethics narrowly understood and other ethical topics (e.g. climate change and its impact on the poor). We will use the recent encyclical by Pope Francis on the environment (Laudato Si— “On Care for Our Common Home”) to help us frame some of these concerns.
