Caption: Coral bleaching is linked directly to ocean warming, and it is occurring at an increasingly alarming rate. The effects are far-reaching because both marine animals and humans, especially in coastal communities, rely on coral reefs and the ecosystem services they provide. The National Zoo here in D.C. features an exhibit dedicated to education about coral bleaching, and while coral bleaching may feel far away, this exhibit really brings the topic close to home. The National Zoo also actively participates in research, using an innovative initiative to freeze the sperm of coral in a process called cryopreservation. Coral bleaching is an urgent and distressing issue, and I hope that my infographic spreads awareness about the causes and consequences, as well as possibilities for conservation.
